Lelepa Anchorage is on the Northwestern side of Lelapa island. It has a barrier reef protecting it and entrance to the anchorage is through an opening in this reef. Good light and water "reading" skills are essential. There is a fair amount of coral inside the anchorage, but nearly all of it is passable. The biggest challenge is finding a place to put the anchor for the least amount of grumbling and coral damage. Once settled, this is a lovely spot, protected in prevailing SE/E winds and the snorkeling & diving opportunities are great. There were 4 cruising boats anchored comfortably when we were here. There is a small day trip operation whereby a few guests from Efate are brought to Lelapa Island for the day to see a cave, an old WWII plane crash and to snorkel. It is a quiet island and the guests leave in the afternoon. Rubin is the chief in the area and he & his wife are most welcoming. When we were here in 6/2014, the Lelapa Tours staff imposed a $1,000VT/day "anchoring charge" that allowed us to walk to the windwardside beach, bat cave & plane along with dive & snorkel on our own. The scuba dive site that we found is an especially good one. We were not impressed with the fee considering there are no moorings to tie to but this place is so special we wouldn't have wanted to miss it.  Note from Slip Away - A look at the aerial photo and chart info in the Tusker Guide is very helpful in terms of entering the anchorage through the coral reef.

"Not Much Sand Left"

We tried to anchor here yesterday (21 July 2017) and had no luck despite several attempts. We think that cyclone Pam may have taken away the sand and now there just seems to be very thin layer over coral and lots of bombies. It's a shame. It's very pretty but we just couldn't make our trusty Rockna stick.

Although a nice view and good diving and snorkeling the holding is not great. Mostly dead broken coral.
