Crowley's Yacht Yard is on the Calumet River about a mile up river from Calumet Harbor on Lake Michigan and is where I store in the winter.  You pass three draw bridges (two draw bridges open on demand,  a rail bridge is usually open).  There's a ship's store on site, a few restaurants within a 2-3 blocks and shopping and  commuter train to downtown within a mile or two.  The area is very industrial.

Beware that large ships (600'+) and tugs use the river but it's not frequent.  You know when they're coming with securite calls and AIS.

The picture shows a ship passing at the height of fall haul-out season.

Anchored on a Friday night in order to get to Crowley's Yacht Yard early Saturday for haul-out.  Area is well protected from Lake Michigan except in south-southeast winds.  Depth is about 15'.  Bottom is soft mud which held well for me with light winds that night.

Shore directly to the west is city park and vacant land (former steel mill).  Industry and Hammond Horseshoe Casino dominates the south including northwest Indiana steel mills.

Fuel and pump-out are available at the Hammond marine about 3.5 miles south.

Picture was taken in May, 2016 about 1/2 mile southeast and shows the area where I anchored.  The shore has changed little since taken.

Monroe Harbor south is an anchorage for day use only.  The park district doesn't allow overnight anchoring.  Overnight anchoring is allowed two miles north in the "playpen", north of Navy Pier and Jardine water purification plant.

The bottom offers good holding (clay and mud).  It's crowded on weekends and deeper water (15-20 feet in the center) so you might have to set less scope than ideal.

There's a lot of boat traffic with water taxis along the shore every 5-10 minutes and boats of all sizes coming.  There are great views of the city and excellent people watching on other boats and shore.

Pictures were taken after most of the boats left due to the approaching thunderstorm.  The strongest gusts for this storm were less than 20 knots.
