Margaret Bay is a popular anchorage
that is tucked around the tip of Cape Grenville. It is 40 miles from
Portland Roads and 70 miles from the Escape River. Providing great
protection from SE winds with virtually no swell & good holding,
you can rest easy. East winds would be protected too but there would
probably be swell. The most common anchorage spot is just around the
point of land that is to the west of Watch Dog Bay. Be aware of
Bremmer shoal when approaching the anchorage and also note an
isolated underwater rock on the chart to the western side of the bay.
At low tide, the beach becomes a huge sand flat, making for easy
walking. Ashore, there's a trail that leads for over a mile through
varied mangrove, woodlands and pandanus to the ocean side at Indian
Bay. It starts on the left hand side of the long white sand beach
visible from the anchorage, under a palm tree. The trail is well
marked with all manner of blue colored flotsam. Indian Bay has a
large, flat beach at low tide and we found nautilus shells &
glass fishnet floats at the tide line (among other debris). We were
told by someone that we might see crocodiles around Margaret Bay, but
we never saw any. There is good fishing in this bay, and shrimp/fish
trawlers frequently use this anchorage to rest during the day.
They'll sell their catch or trade for a few beers.
