The village of Namrole is on the
Southern side of the island of Buru, which is about 87 miles SW of
Ambon. It is part of the South Molucca Regency. The charts for this
area are particularly poor, which would make this anchorage seem
unprotected but at least in August, with ESE winds, it was
comfortable and protected. There was a mild southerly swell that
found its way into the anchorage but it wasn't a problem. The use of
a satellite chart is really helpful. We have also uploaded a route
onto Venture Farther, please see Route marker listed below on this
page.Approach is clear from the east in deep water. The headland that
you pass just before making the turn to come into the anchorage is
actually an island (Palau Klasi)with a small channel between it and
the mainland. There is a light on the western side of this island.
Round the island and proceed into the anchorage, keeping the wharf on
your port side. This is a surprisingly busy wharf so save room for a
turning basin. Also note a reef/shoal the projects into the starboard
side of the anchorage if you venture too far over that way. This
anchorage waypoint was in 17 feet of water, good holding, no reef
nearby. There were 24 sailboats here at the time of the rally and
there were no issues. We left this anchorage before light when headed
onward.
The townspeople were friendly and
helpful. We visited as part of the Sail2Indonesia Rally so didn't
explore much on our own. It seems basic services were available. We
noted a bank, very small food stores, a restaurant named Diana's with
reportedly good local food. There is a place to beach the dinghy on
the left hand side of a small pier at the head of the harbor.
Snorkeling in the shallows & channel of the small island at the
harbor entrance is a good way to cool off.
