This anchorage is such a beautiful spot
with clear water, good snorkeling and lovely views. There are 3
smoking volcanoes within sight and small islands dotted around the
anchorage. There is also a pretty sand spit that provides protection
and a good place for beachcombing and evening happy hour. Entry is
either from the south past Kenaweh Island or from the west through a
large open channel. Reef edges are easy to see in good light and
there are no shallow bommies in the anchorage because it is deep!
During the SE monsoon, this anchorage is very protected and there's
little wind. We saw some boats come through the NE channel but there
are some shallow spots on that route. Holding is good in sand and ranges from about 40 feet upward depending on where you anchor. Expect
current. If anchored over near the NE channel, expect swell. The
least roll is behind the sand spit. Local boats from a village
visible on the mainland frequently use this area for fishing and
visiting yachts. You'll have plenty of opportunities to buy bananas &
fish or give things away here. The snorkeling is good right in front
of the anchorage, toward the sand spit.
