Owen Channel makes for a nice, calm,
anchorage when moving up or down the coast. It is in the Flinders
Group of islands just to the west of Cape Melville and separates
Flinders from Stanley Island. This area is park land and the channel
is attractive. There is nice mountain scenery too. You can enter from
either side of the channel. There is a sand spit that projects
westward from the western side of Flinders Island near the anchorage
and this actually provides the protection from the north and also
slows some of the current flow from the Owen channel. Be sure to look
out for it, especially when coming from the north through Owen
channel. Holding was good in sand. Ashore, near the sand spit, there
is a park sign and a trail of sorts that runs along the tide line to
an old well and a rock engraving from the HMS Dart. There is also a
park walking trail on Stanley Island about a quarter of the way down
the eastern side in an indentation with mangroves. We tried to reach
the trailhead at low tide and it was too shallow to approach. You can
find park maps online on Queensland Parks website for Flinders
Islands National Park.
Alternatively, you can anchor on the
western side of Stanley Island in Stokes Bay, although we didn't
explore this area.
