Moyo island is a nature reserve and we
were excited about anchoring here. However, due to local wind
variances, there was a west wind so the anchorage was a lee shore for part of the day and
not protected. It also seemed difficult to see how to access the
park. There is an exclusive resort called Awanwana that might offer
info on visiting shore. Otherwise, this anchorage can be used for a
swim and an overnight stop.
When approaching the island from the
north, be aware that there are some offlying dangers- stay 1 mile off
the coast. When approaching the shoreline of the anchorage, note the
coastal reef that runs along shore, as well as the drop off. Near
this waypoint there is a little break in the reef which forms a
shallow bowl of black sand which makes it a little easier to avoid
having the anchor on a drop off. The water was clear with hundreds of
garden eels swaying in the black sand and the coastal reef was OK for
snorkeling.
