Kumai is up a wide river and is the main access point for the orangutan reserve and Camp Leakey. The river is wide and once through the entrance, the depths are good. Currents in the river are generally downstream at about 2 kts. Kumai is full of swallow towers that are used to harvest the birds nest for birds nest soup. You can hear the birds constantly. The town itself is not much but has a certain charm. The local pasar is good with plenty of well priced vegetables. Fuel, water and laundry can be arranged. Also basic repairs if needed.
