Bottom Type Sand

Cooktown is one of the very last places to stop on the way North where one can get provisions or repairs done. But the anchorage can be challenging. The approach channel is well buoyed. Once inside, the area to maneuver is relatively small because of significant shoaling outside of the main channel. Boats anchor in the turning basin, along the channel off the town and if the wharf is free that fronts the laundromat and takeaway establishment, you could pull up as we did and inquire with Thomas, the owner as of 2015. Boats can raft up along the wharf and not have to worry about the wind, tide and shoals that make this anchorage uneasy. Holding is good is sand at least. Take care for crocodiles. Ashore there is fuel, laundry, a well stocked IGA supermarket, clothing & fishing shops and lots of history about Captain James Cook. He repaired his ship the Endeavor in this river (named the same). There is hiking up to Grassy Hill lookout, up Mt Cook to the botanical garden. There are also a few museums.
