Part of the famed Spice Islands, Banda Neira is one of ten volcanic
islands in the Banda Archipelago, historically known for the cultivation
of mace & nutmeg, once exclusive to the region. The town still
shows the remnants of the trading centre it once was. In the early 16th
century, merchants flocked to the area to make their fortunes. Banda
Neira is only one of three inhabited islands, with the biggest
population.
The Banda Islands are reputed to have exquisite corals and abundant
sealife, and is an internationally recognized diving destination.
This waypoint is where we stern tied to
shore on the Bandaneira side of Zonnegat Bay in the Banda Islands. It
is in front of the Naira Dive Shop & Resort and was very
friendly, secure and attractive. There's a place to put the dinghy
right at the dive shop and they can cater to laundry, water, tours
and of course, diving. This area was also very protected when we
visited during the month of August. There are loads of things to do
in the area such as spice tours, climbing the volcano on Gunung Api,
snorkeling, diving and eating out at one of many great places.
Internet is excellent from this spot since the tower is right here!
If you come here, don't miss having dinner at the Cilu Bintang
Estate, just in front of the fort.
You can also anchor (with a stern to
shore) directly across Zonnegat Bay on the Gunung Api side. The
waypoint is 04 31.18S 129 53.46E
