Horn Island provides protected
anchorage in SE winds when visiting the Thursday Island area. The
anchorage is between the long strip of Madge Reef and Horn Island
itself. Holding is only fair so check that the anchor is set well.
Approach is well marked with nav aids. We used the Flinders Pass
entrance. There is a wharf on Horn Island with a dinghy dock and two
grocery stores on shore. The larger one is named Ibis. There are also
two hotels, which may be able to provide laundry service & also,
a map of the area with Horn Island on one side and TI on the other.
There are regular ferries to Thursday Island from two different
companies from the main wharf. McDonalds was the least expensive.
There are rubbish receptacles on the wharf & in town. Crocodiles
can be seen hauled out on the mud banks of the anchorage. There were
not any attractions on Horn Island.
Thursday Island has a museum featuring
local artwork & crafts, restaurants, a larger Ibis grocery store,
a bank and Customs is also located here. If you turn right after
leaving the ferry dock, it is just down the road in an attractive,
old style building. You can walk to Grassy Hill Fort for views of the
area.
