Riung is a tidy little village set in
the 17 Islands Marine Park. It has a protected anchorage and some
cruiser amenities. It is also a popular low key backpacker stop with
a couple of guesthouses in town. Approach is fairly easy with good
light and a satellite image as reef obstacles are then easy to see.
Please see uploaded route marker. Traditional charts such as CM93 and
Navionics are significantly lacking for this anchorage so beware!
Once inside the protected anchorage, there is ample room for many
boats with fairly good holding in soft mud. No swell here!
Tie the dinghy to the wharf in the
anchorage. There are several squid boats & tour boats that use
this wharf too. There are 2 banks, (one w/ ATM) internet top ups
(there is speedy internet here), restaurants, a produce market and
small grocery stores ashore along with very friendly people who are
used to visitors. Fuel & laundry service can be arranged. You can
book a day trip to Bajawa to see traditional villages & a
waterfall or you can arrange for a snorkel trip to the park islands.
You can also visit these islands yourself via your own boat (Palau
Rutong is a common day anchorage) or in your own dinghy if you have a
sturdy one since the islands aren't very far away. The islands offer
nice views, pretty good snorkeling & white sand beaches. Despite
park status, the local people do fish on these reefs so don't expect
pristine conditions!
