Tomia is one of the islands that make
up Wakatobi. It is not written up in most cruising guides but is
actually a great spot, especially if you like to dive! It also has a
protected harbor, entered through a narrow, well marked channel.
Once inside, there is plenty of room to anchor, choose your depth
with fairly good holding in sandy mud with rubble. This waypoint was
in 17 feet of water, on a shelf, close to the village. Other spots
are approximately 60-70 feet.
Approach is easiest with a satellite
chart & good light is essential. Then, you can clearly see the
channel into the harbor which is on the western side of Tomia Island
and adjacent to the other small island of Onemobaa. See separate ROUTE MARKER for directions in.
Several sailboats traversed this channel at mid-tide or better while
were here and none had a problem. Locals & supply boats use it
regularly.
The village of Lamanggau on Onemobaa
Island, visible from the anchorage has a very small store with
limited goods but we did purchase gasoline (benzene) for the dinghy
and some produce. People were very helpful. Tie the dinghy at the stone plaza area that has bollards and steps. Wakatobi Dive Resort is down
from the anchorage to the south on the western side of Onemobaa Is.
It offers diving & meals ashore to cruisers. They have a good map
of all the dive & snorkeling spots. You can also do these things
on your own. This area is part of the Wakatobi National
Marine Park although we didn't see any info, officials or signage to say so. The resort charges a park fee when using
their dive services but we dove on our own and weren't charged any
fees or visited by any officials. Please see
separate diving marker for more info on the sites.
