Hoga Island is a nice spot, especially
for diving. Entry to the anchorage from the NW is deep & easy in
good light because the reef edges are easy to see. In the channel
between the reefs adjacent to the white navigation light, the depth
shoals to approx 24 feet but then it deepens again once inside. Be
aware that the reef juts out beyond the nav aid both when entering
the channel and also once inside so don't cut it close before turning
into the anchorage basin. Anchor in sand on the Hoga Island side
anywhere from 25 meters on up. Expect current and some wind chop but
generally we found this anchorage to be pleasant. The casual Hoga
Island Dive Resort is on shore and can provide meals with advance
notice. There is also a large complex of old bungalows that were not
open when we visited. The pathways through the buildings made for
decent walking. Tie the dinghy on the long wharf visible from the
anchorage. The stilt village near Kaledupa welcomes visitors and
behind it, on Kaledupa itself, there is another village that at near
high tide, once can proceed up a little canal under an elevated
walkway to a place with steps to tie the dinghy. There are small
stores and a produce market here and benzene is available. See
separate markers for diving. Snorkeling is good near the nav light.
