Stocking Island forms a great deal of the protection and beauty that makes Georgetown a cruising hub in the Bahamas. It's one of the only places we know that seems to basically be there for the enjoyment of cruisers like a playground of sorts. Not only does it offer tons of space to anchor, the island has exquisite beaches on both sides (the east side is great for shelling), great snorkeling opportunities, trails to walk, the Chat N Chill Bar for conch salad, volleyball and cruiser get togethers and there are only a handful of people who live on the island so it is quiet. You can pretty much anchor anywhere along the island as the bottom is sand and in prevailing easterly winds, there is good protection. There are the famous "hurricane holes" which are now mostly rental moorings and while they offer complete protection, they get very little breeze. With a decent dinghy, its easy enough to make the trip over to Georgetown for supplies. There is also a ferry service.
