Excellent protection in West-North winds. Depth 45-55ft in firm sand, good holding. Kaikoura Island is a beautiful, little publicized national scenic preserve managed by a team of volunteer trustees. It has extensive hiking trails, one of which is accessible from this anchorage but there isn't a good landing area for long trips ashore. It would be better to dinghy around to the SE tip of the island where there's a wharf for easy tie-up. Trails lead to high overlooks & there is good birding here- morepork owls, songbirds, banded rails & kakas.
