Previously known as Selwyn Island, Motu Kaikoura was purchased for the people of New Zealand and opened in 2005. It is managed by a team of volunteer trustees with major goals being restoration of natural vegetation, pest-free status and outdoor/environmental education. There's little published about this island in local tourist materials, however visitors are welcome. The wharf offers easy dinghy tie-up. Trail options include a perimeter track that winds along the outer edge of the whole island. Well marked & easy to follow, it was established for the purpose of setting traps for pests. It goes up & down over hills to lovely epen views and wooded areas. You can walk across the island on a dirt road (2 hrs return) or take one of two hiking trails (1 hr each) that also cross the island. Each of these meet in the middle at a seldom used airstrip that also offers nice views.
