It's an easy 15 minute trip from Shoal Bay around the tip of Nelson Head to Nelson Bay, the main town for Port Stephens. While not a great place to anchor due to significant tidal flow, and the fact that the area is within a marine park, there are 3 free pink public moorings to pick up. There's also d'Albora Marina at Nelson Bay, protected by a breakwater, which has fuel, pump-out, laundry (for public use), berths, moorings and there are even a few courtesy berths there for 24hr time tie-ups. This floating dock is all the way to port when you enter the breakwater, near the ferry loading dock. Within this protected marina is a beach which is good for landing a dinghy. Ashore there's an information center, a booking center for various day boat charters, many shoppes & restaurants, hotels, banking, but no grocery store. The closest grocery store is at the large Salamander Shopping Center, a few kilometers away, or at IGA in Shoal Bay. There is bus service available, check at the info center. On the grounds of the info center, there is a multi-use path called the Bridle Path which leads westward along the shore meeting up with more parks, beaches and coves. It also leads eastward. Nelson Bay is adjacent to Fly Point, part of the Port Stephens Marine Park. The perimeter is marked with yellow buoys. This is a fantastic snorkeling/scuba diving spot rich with sealife. The water is clearest at high tide, there is good shore access at the point or you can anchor the dinghy in close to shore and swim from there. Don't miss it!
