Shoal Bay is the first bay on the port side when entering Port Stephens passing Tomaree Head to port and Yacaaba Head to starboard. Considered an all weather entrance, there is also a 24hr VMR (Volunteer Marine Radio) station. Entering is relatively straight forward altough there is a shoal called Entrance Shoal just inside the harbor which you must pass to either side of. Leading lights take you to starboard of it if arriving from the north, and if from the south, it's easy to curve around Tomaree Head into Shoal Bay and avoid the shoal. The water color & clarity is beautiful in the bay. Holding is good in sand, approx 15 feet- choose your depth. Shoal Bay offers good protection from southerly quadrant winds although a mild ocean swell can roll in. The SE side of the bay is quite shallow. There are free pink public moorings scattered about however check to be sure you'll have enough water at low tide when picking one up. Land the dinghy on the beach and ashore there is access to the trails to Tomaree Head National Park and WWII fortifications & the beaches on the ocean side. If you walk in the opposite direction to Nelson Head, you'll find the VMR station, a lookout, an old lighthouse keeper's house with museum and a cafe. There are also a few shoppes and a small IGA in the town of Shoal Bay.
