Diving in Port Stephens is wonderful. We focused on the area around Nelson Bay because it's the best known and easiest to accomplish from the boat since the sites are all within easy dinghy distance from the free courtesy moorings nearby. Fly Point is both the name of the shoreside park & the rocky outcropping in Nelson Bay. It is the most popular shore dive and is also a marine park. You'll find a lot of sealife here. You can snorkel or scuba; both are best done at high tide, but especially scuba because you're further from shore and hence more into the bulk of the current. The vis is better at high tide as well. We brought our dinghy in close to shore just off the beach and anchored it on a sandy spot so that we could gear up from the dinghy since our boat was on a courtesy mooring at Nelson Bay a couple of hundred yards away. There is a great website listed here that provides excellent descriptions of the dives, a very useful map and also good pics & info on the creatures you will see here. There are two additional dives we did in this same area but this one was the best; please see other markers.

Features
  • Pink courtesy moorings in Nelson Bay
  • Snorkeling is good too
