Airlie Beach is the gateway town to the
Whitsundays. It is also a good place to reprovision, refuel, have a
restaurant meal and perhaps tuck into a marina. Airlie is easy to
approach because it is a wide, clear of obstructions, relatively
shallow bay and you can pretty much anchor anywhere outside the
moored boats. This anchorage waypoint is right off the breakwater at
Abel Point Marina. Inside the breakwater, there is a dinghy dock,
laundry machines at the marina, rubbish disposal and a nice walkway
that runs in both directions. If you go left from the marina
entrance, you will reach the center of town and with restaurants,
tour booking offices and a smallish Countdown grocery store. If you
head right and follow the waterside walkway, for a bit, you'll pass
through pretty park land, great views and some residential areas. If
you continue in this direction, you will come to the main road and
shortly after, a mall with many shops, a large Cole's grocery store,
a Macca's, etc. Airlie is protected in SE winds, but do expect some
easterly swell to rock you to sleep.
