This impressive fort sits on the peninsula of La Mola just at the entrance of Mahon harbor. Commissioned to be built by Queen Isabel II in 1848, it wasn't completed until 1875. It has really interesting features such as vast underground tunnels and symmetrical arches and hallways that make for neat pictures. The grounds are vast and there is a marked pathway that leads you through the points of interest culminating at two large Vickers cannons on the point which are unique in themselves. There is a small cafe in the interior, options for audio guides, there is a short film and plenty of parking. However, if anchored at Cala Taulera, just head to the small sand beach in the anchorage next to the old boathouse and walk up to the entrance from there. Most convenient!
