Cala Taulera is a long, very protected cala just inside and to starboard of the main entrance to Mahon. It sits between the peninsula of La Mola with its big fort and Isla Lazareto with its big fort and there is even a defensive tower above the anchorage so it feels very safe! It is easy to approach, well buoyed and holding is good in sand. This cala is the only place in all of Mahon that anchoring is authorized and as the rules currently go, it is at best 3 days, then you must move on or seek a berth. The police boat rounds each morning logging each boat and may come alongside to provide a map and welcome. Technically, the anchorage is only to be used for overflow if all other berthing options are full but the fact is the locals come to this place frequently and it is very beautiful and they fought to keep it open. The Canal de San Jordi at the north end of the cala carries about 9 feet and makes the trip further up the harbor easier than going around. Tour boats use it frequently and there is a marked channel on the  west side of the anchorage for them. It is easy to dinghy to the sand beach and then walk up to the entrance gate of La Mola fort. Otherwise, there are no services here. Isla del Lazareto appears to require a boat tour in order to visit it. There is a town dinghy dock (see it on "places" for this marker) and the trip along the harbor is scenic.

Features
  • Even if you don't go into La Mola Fort museum, you can still walk onto the peninsula for views
  • Very small, but popular with locals. Tie up here to go to La Mola fort
Reviews
"One of the Best"

This is one of the nicest anchorages in Menorca. If you do decide to visit the fort ashore make sure and get out to the point to see the "Vickers 15"" guns from the Spanish Civil War. They were in service until the 1990's so very interesting to look at. The biggest coastal defense guns I have ever seen.
