Ratua Island Anchorage and Moorings

Description (1)The anchorage in front of Ratua Island Resort is one of our favorites in Vanuatu. It's very protected from all directions except west. Try to enter in good light and be mindful of currents in Malo Passage as well as Guichen Reef which is just to the south of the anchorage. The resort maintains 2 free moorings that they'd like yachts to pick up rather than damage the coral however you can still anchor in sand patches among small bits of coral in approx 40-50 feet. The resort is friendly toward cruisers and their grounds are really pleasant to walk on. There's a 'round the island trail', they have a really nice restaurant & bar with plenty of ourdoor seating. The surrounding reefs are lovely to snorkel on right from the boat. There's a blue hole within dinghy distance on Malo Island. Adjacent Aore Island has an SDA school whose pier is accessible from the anchorage. There's room to tie a dinghy and go for a pleasant walk. We also biked on this island. The moorings are now 10,000 vatu per night (about $100 US)! They are not maintained and are in very bad condition. There is some question as to whether the resort is still cruiser friendly as there have been some recent incidents (Aug 2017). There is plenty of room to anchor and the reef to the South of the anchorage is a great place to snorkel.
