Oyster Bay is a very protected anchorage from all directions once you get in the inner harbor. Getting in isn't difficult as long as you have a moderate draft, proceed around a high tide, with good light & good water reading skills. The Oyster Bay Resort maintains markers for the cut which are also very helpful. In 2014, these were as follows: One red mark on the outer reef pass that is to be left to port, followed by 2 pairs of red & green that guide you through the shallowest portion making a slight curve to starboard. We traversed this twice at close to high tide a few days after a full moon and saw approx 9 feet at this curve. If there was concern about draft, one could anchor in the outer bay or use it to anchor temporarily while sounding the shallowest portion first by dinghy. From the markers on in to the anchorage, it was easy going. The anchorage itself is very large & the holding pretty good in soft mud approx 40-45 feet. The resort welcomes cruisers and provides services such as laundry, rubbish, happy hour, meals, internet and an island trail. Getting a bus in to Luganville (200VT pp each way) is easy from the mainland side of the anchorage and there's good dinghy tie-up on the beach there with a pulley system to keep dinghies afloat despite the tide state. There are 2 beautiful blue holes (see separate entries) within easy dinghy distance from the anchorage.
