Alvor is a small fishing town with a newer tourist development and a lovely anchorage. It is about 5 miles from Portimao and 2 miles from Lagos. It has two breakwaters at the entrance and a good sized anchorage just inside the entry that will hold more than a dozen boats. Since the local fishing fleet is small, there is really no problem with anchoring "in the middle" as there is little traffic. You wouldn't want to enter this anchorage in heavy onshore conditions or strong wind against tide. There is current but it isn't as strong as other harbors. Anchored in the center, there was 10 feet at low tide in 9/2017. Watch the chart for depths as the anchorage does shoal on either side of the inner breakwaters. You can proceed upstream to anchor off the town of Alvor outside the moored boats, best done close to high tide for greatest depths to cross a sand bar on the way. There is a dinghy dock in town to tie to and lots of restaurants. There are paths to see the rock formations and the sand dunes. Since Lagos doesn't have a protected anchorage, Alvor can be a good alternative, especially if you have a fast dinghy. You could also take a bus to Lagos.
