St Pierre is an attractive village on the northwest side of Martinique at the foot of Mt Pelee volcano. The harbor is very picturesque, offers good protection from prevailing winds and the holding is good in black sand. Approach is easy and clear of dangers except for some fish trap buoys. There is the typical sturdy pier that the French are known for that is both a ferry/day charter dock and the place to put your dinghy. Nice daily produce market right at the head of the pier along with a fish market. 8 a Huit supermarket along with a few others for groceries. There are 2 self serve laundries. Communal buses to other parts of the island, especially north where you might want to visit the hiking trails of Mt Pelee or the northern black sand beaches near the town of Precheur. The history of St Pierre is that Mt Pelee erupted in 1902 on Ascension Day killing 30,000 people leaving only 2 survivors- a prisoner in a cell and a cobbler in his basement workshop. Some of the ruins are still visible and signs explain the details. There are also a couple of museums to check out. The tourist office is in the square up on the hill that is directly above the old stone walls visible from the anchorage. A dozen anchored ships sank in the eruption also and are now scuba dive sites. Local dive shops can take you out or you can dive the one right on front of the old stone wall in town on your own. You can walk 40 minutes or take a bus/cab to the Depaz Rum Distillery and have a free self guided tour on beautiful grounds.
