The China Shop is the relatively
current free zone after the fast current channel of the Cauldron/Shotgun Reef and
is frequently used as a safety stop for scuba dives. It is just
inside the tip of the southern end of Gili Lawa Laut. It is a
beautiful area full of all kinds of corals, fans and critters
including lots of leaf scorpion fish! We saw three on one coral head,
each a different color. It's easy to anchor the dinghy in sand or
rubble in shallow water and then descend and follow the drop-off
toward the west. At about 55 feet, the bottom levels off to white
sand but the best heads are at around 25-40 feet so you don't need to go that far. You will see lovely coral heads in sand. The heads in the rubbley area are good too. We did this dive 3 times, twice there was some current if you get too far out into the pass (over 50 feet) and once at slack water where there was no current. Staying in the best area with the richest coral heads means you are not in the current. The turtles are very tame
and there are loads of fish- a fantastic spot!
Features
There could be some current although the best spot is tucked inside out of the main current of the pass.
There is decent snorkeling here too!
There is a mooring around the corner to the west on the other side of the pass.
