Tavira is a very old & attractive Portuguese town with Roman and Moorish history set up the Rio Gilao which is not navigable for cruising sailboats. However, the Ria Formosa, just inside the entrance breakwaters is navigable and you can anchor here and dinghy up to town. Don't enter the breakwaters in swell or strong wind against tide as this entrance is full of boils and cross currents even on a good day. There are no longer any leading marks or buoys on approach, just lights on either side of the breakwaters. There are lit red & green posts once on the Ria Formosa. Once through the breakwaters, turn to port past two ferry landings on Ilha Formosa and proceed up the river to find a spot to anchor among or upriver from the moored boats. Don't expect to find any more than 2-3 meters at low water and remember there is 3 meters of tide here. There is a fair amount of boat traffic going up & down the river and they pass close so be sure to be well lit at night. Holding is excellent in sand. You can see the bottom at high tide. Famous, wide, gorgeous beach on Ilha Formosa ocean side which is a natural area. It is easy to put the dinghy upstream on a sandy beach to port with a boardwalk to the ocean side. Interestingly, the river that leads to town- Rio Gilhao, is not marked but there is constant boat traffic and one can easily see the shoals anyway to proceed by dinghy and tie up along the stone wall on the starboard side of the harbor where there is a park and ladders to climb up if the tide is low. Look for the red benches!
